COP 26 White Paper: Indonesian Youth Determination for Clean Energy and Climate Action

Youth play an essential part in the development of renewable energy and the mission to mitigate climate change. In numbers, Indonesia has over 64 million young people, or roughly 24% of the population, demonstrating the youth's potential to participate in the energy transition process. Society of Renewable Energy (SRE) is a movement that invites the younger generation to participate in the development and deployment of renewable energy sources. This white paper outlines the topics addressed during the Road to COP26, hosted by SRE on the 6-8 October 2021, inviting delegates from their respected field of expertise as well as the national and international youth community. Access to energy education, gender equality in renewable energy, socio-economic potential and the talent supply for the energy sector, and the inclusion of communities and indigenous peoples in the process of adopting renewable energy are the four major problems covered. As for strategy to reach our goal, we offer four phases. The first is to raise young people's awareness of energy and climate challenges, both theoretically and practically. Second, encourage initiatives to democratize opportunities for young people to gain practical experience in the energy and climate sectors to improve their knowledge and skills. Third, the public and private sectors must work together to provide and accommodate youth synthesis and the development of novel renewable energy ideas. Finally, efforts to foster a collaborative culture based on the Penta-helix model must be emphasized to assist young people in transforming their knowledge and abilities into the real world.
